GAIA urges zero climate subsidies for incinerators, landfill gas and biomass burners

To properly serve climate stabilization, community revitalization and energy conservation goals, the national Renewable Electricity Standard should:

a. Exclude all municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration, including “staged incineration” (gasification, plasma and pyrolysis).

b. Exclude biomass and landfill gas from ‘Renewable Energy Resource’ definitions.

c. Exclude all direct and indirect subsidies for incinerators, landfill gas, and biomass, as well as any qualifications for existing incinerators in calculations of “base amount” for electricity suppliers.
